Welcome to the official information page for our Unaffiliated Dressage Competitions at Craven Arena. Whether you’re a first-time competitor or an experienced rider, our events are designedto be inclusive, supportive, and professionally managed.
Competition Classes
Our dressage competitions run throughout the day in the following order:

Freestyle to Music – Open Class
Open to all levels.
Please note: Test sheets will only be available after the final competitor has completed their test.
Non-Competitive Class
This class provides a valuable opportunity to ride in front of a judge without the pressure of competition.
- Riders may select any of the 2024 British Dressage (BD) tests listed below
- Ideal for training or introducing a horse to the competition environment
- Alternative tack that does not comply with British Dressage (BD) rules is permitted
Dressage Tests
We exclusively use the latest 2024 British Dressage (BD) tests
Tests can be purchased from the official British Dressage shop
Judging Standards
All classes are judged by British Dressage (BD) qualified judges, including trainees. This ensures:
- Consistent and fair scoring
- Adherence to BD rules and standards
- Constructive feedback from trained professionals
Our commitment to using BD judges upholds the integrity of the sport and supports rider development
Competition Times
Competition times are published on the Craven Arena Facebook page three days prior to each event.

Rules & Regulations

Whip Use Policy
To promote fair play and horse welfare, the following whip regulations apply
Maximum Lengths
- Horses: 120 cm (including lash)
- Ponies: 100 cm (including lash)
General Use
- Whips may be carried in most classes unless otherwise stated.
- Must be used ethically and responsibly. Misuse may result in elimination or disciplinary action
Dispensation for Riders with Disabilities
- Riders requiring a whip as a compensating aid must apply for a dispensation, supported by medical documentation.

Rider PPE & Competition Wear Policy
Mandatory PPE
All riders must wear appropriate PPE when mounted:
- A riding hat that meets current safety standards (e.g., PAS 015, VG1, ASTM F1163, or equivalent)
- Properly fitted riding boots with a defined heel
- Body protectors are strongly recommended and may be mandatory for certain phases (e.g., cross-country)

Competition Wear
Riders must wear:
- A jacket or show shirt (as per discipline rules)
- Light-colored breeches or jodhpurs
- Gloves
Failure to comply may result in disqualification or penalties
Event Cancellation Policy
We understand that unexpected situations can arise. Our cancellation policy is as follows:
Severe Weather Cancellations
If an event is cancelled due to severe weather, riders will be offered the choice of:
- A full refund, or
- Transferring their entry to another scheduled competition
No Refunds After Times Are Released
Once competition times are published, no refunds will be issued under any circumstances, including:
- Rider withdrawal for personal reasons
- Horse injury or illness
- Scheduling conflicts
